ATHLOS, the women’s-only track venture headed by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, has announced its expansion to two meets in 2026 with more than $2.1 million distributed in prize money across seven events.
What you need to know:
– ATHLOS will return to Icahn Stadium in New York City on Friday, Oct. 2nd. The second meet will be announced at a later date. It is believed that ATHLOS will look to tap an international venue for the second location, which will be held before the New York City event. We do know that both meets will take place after the 2026 World Ultimate Championships in Budapest, which run from Sept. 11th–13th.
The 2024 ATHLOS event took place on Sept. 26th, which was 12 days after the two-day Diamond League Final in Brussels. The 2025 ATHLOS event took place on Oct. 9th and 10th, which was 18 days after the conclusion of the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.
– The two meets will feature seven track and field events. At last year’s ATHLOS meet in New York City, the seven events were the 100 meters, 100 meter hurdles, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile, and long jump. After being a track-only meet in 2024, long jump was added in 2025 with a qualifying round in Times Square and then a final at Icahn Stadium.
– There will be six athletes per event, which is how the meet was structured in 2024 and 2025.
– Athletes will score points over the two meets. The athlete with the highest cumulative points across both meets will win the ATHLOS championship title, a $25,000 bonus, and a Tiffany & Co. crown.
– ATHLOS unveiled its scoring system and prize allocation structure:
Place | Points | Prize Money
- First Place | 10 points | $65,000
- Second Place | 8 points | $35,000
- Third Place | 6 points | $20,000
- Fourth Place | 4 points | $15,000
- Fifth Place | 2 points | $10,000
- Sixth Place | 1 point | $6,000
Tiebreaker rule: If athletes are tied on cumulative points, the winner will be determined by the fastest average time in running events or the longest average distance in the long jump.
– It’s worth noting that, on ATHLOS’ website, it reads “an athlete who sweeps their events will have the opportunity to earn a historic maximum purse of $115K.” It’s unclear how they landed on that number or if it’s simply a math error, because two event wins at $65,000 each and the $25,000 championship bonus would amount to $155,000. We await further clarification from ATHLOS on the full prize pool.$115k.
– Ohanian appeared on CBS Mornings on Tuesday. He shared that winners at the ATHLOS meets will also earn equity in the league at this year’s events. “When I think back to Reddit’s IPO day, one of the proudest parts of it for me was knowing that even administrative assistants, a couple of them, were becoming millionaires. That’s the power of equity. One thing start-ups get right is aligning incentives across the board. We think: Why not the same for our athletes? We’re building this league with them.”
– ATHLOS previously teased a team-based format for 2026 but that wrinkle has not been confirmed as part of the early announcements for this year’s events. Olympic medalists Gabby Thomas, Sha’Carri Richardson, and Tara Davis-Woodhall signed on as advisors and owners in ATHLOS last year. Richardson has not competed in an ATHLOS meet yet. Thomas competed in 2024 but missed last year’s meet while recovering from injury. Davis-Woodhall won the long jump at last year’s meet.
