2025 Boston Marathon Elite Fields Announced: Hellen Obiri, Sisay Lemma Return To Defend

By Chris Chavez

January 8, 2025

The Boston Athletic Association has announced the elite men’s and women’s professional fields for the 2025 Boston Marathon on April 21st.

This year marks the 129th running of the race. Last year’s men’s winner was Ehiopia’s Sisay Lemma in 2:06:17, while Hellen Obiri defended her women’s title in 2:22:37. (Race recap and analysis here.)

Quick Thoughts On The Fields Assembled:

Hellen Obiri looks to become the first woman since Ethiopia’s Fatuma Roba (1997, 1998 and 1999) to win three consecutive Boston Marathon titles. Only Germany’s Uta Pippig (1994, 1995 and 1996) and Americans Sara Mae Berman (1969, 1970 and 1971) and Bobbi Gibb (1966, 1967 and 1968) have also accomplished the feat. In 2024, Obiri defended her title, went on to earn a bronze medal at the Paris Olympics, and then took second at the New York City Marathon. Her personal best remains 2:21:38 from the 2023 Boston Marathon.

Sharon Lokedi returns after putting together a thrilling duel against Obiri last year. The duo were together going into the final mile, but Obiri had one final gear making the left on Hereford to pull away. Lokedi was also on Obiri’s shoulder at the Paris Olympics and finished fourth—just four seconds behind Obiri.

– The fastest personal bests on the women’s side belong to Ethiopia’s Amane Beriso (2:14:58) and Yalemzerf Yehualaw (2:16:52). Beriso, who sits as the fifth-fastest woman of all-time, could pose a strong challenge to Obiri after their battle in 2023, where Beriso finished only 12 seconds back of Obiri. Beriso skipped Boston last year after taking third at the Tokyo Marathon in 2:16:58 and then was fifth at the Paris Olympics.

– U.S. Olympians and training partners Conner Mantz and Clayton Young are sticking to running the same marathon together as they did throughout 2024. They finished within seconds of each other at the U.S. Olympic Trials (Mantz was 1st in 2:09:05, Young was 2nd in 2:09:06); Paris Olympics (Mantz was 8th in 2:08:12, Young was 9th in 2:08:44) and New York City Marathon (Mantz was 6th in 2:09:00 and Young was 7th in 2:09:21). This will be Young’s Boston debut. Mantz was 11th in 2:10:25 at the 2023 Boston Marathon.

Sisay Lemma is looking to become the first Ethiopian man to win back-to-back Boston Marathon titles. Lemma missed the 2024 Olympics due to injury and was replaced by eventual gold medalist Tamirat Tola on the Ethiopian squad. He returned to racing with a 2:04:59, 10th place showing at the Valencia Marathon in December.

Dakotah Lindwurm, the top American at last year’s Paris Olympics (12th in 2:26:44) is looking to bounce back after struggling in New York in November to a 2:31:45 finish. She’s also looking to erase some ghosts in Boston. Her previous results are: 12th in 2:31:04 in 2021; 14th in 2:29:55 in 2022; 26th in 2:33:53 in 2023. Sara Vaughn, who was the top American at the New York City Marathon in 2:26:56 for sixth place overall, is looking to do the same. Her record in Boston includes a 21st place showing in 2:36:27 in 2022 and DNF in 2023.

Jess McClain, last year’s fourth place finisher at the U.S. Olympic Trials, will run her first Boston and second career World Marathon Major. She was eighth overall (and the second American woman) at the New York City Marathon in 2:27:19.

Keira D’Amato, the former American record holder, will get a do-over for her first marathon under coach Ed Eyestone’s guidance. She dropped out of the Chicago Marathon due to a foot injury that popped up in the days leading up to the race.

– 2018 Boston Marathon champion Des Linden will be going for her 12th finish on Boylston Street. Last year. She finished 16th in 2:28:27.
