We all knew it was coming. Christian Coleman, the 2017 world championship silver medalist at 100 meters, broke the world record in the 60-meter dash on the final day of competition at the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships in Albuquerque.
He hit us with a 6.46 win in the heats, where he eased up at about 40 meters. Then he ran 6.42 in the semifinal, while we were sitting at a coffee shop. Imagine that! We almost missed the running of a world record. No problem though because Coleman was saving the big one for the final.
Some of the competition may have been rattled a bit because there was a false start from one of the other finalists but then they got underway. Coleman had a reaction time of 0.149. That’s insane.
He extended his arms across the finish line in 6.34, which shows that he not only knew he had the win but he needed the really cool photo for the ‘gram since it was going to be a world record.
The previous world record was held by Maurice Greene. Just think that when we started this season, Greene had been the only guy to go sub-6.40.
