Trey Cunningham and Danielle Williams headline the first set of Challengers announced for Grand Slam Track: Philadelphia (May 30th-June 1st). Both athletes are looking to claim their second Slam title. Cunningham is fresh off sweeping the 100m and 110m hurdles in Miami. Williams, meanwhile, prevailed in windy conditions to claim her title in front of a home crowd in Kingston.
Here’s what you need to know:
– After dealing with injuries for much of the past two years, Cunningham is starting to find the form that earned him a silver medal at the 2022 World Championships. This season, he has already beaten Olympic champion Grant Holloway at an early-season race in Gainesville, matched his personal best of 13.00 for 110m hurdles and then backed up his talk and confidence by winning the 100m in Miami in a PB of 10.17.
– Cordell Tinch will also return for his second Grand Slam appearance. He was third in the standings in Kingston but most recently made waves with his 12.87 Diamond League win in China last weekend, which moved him to No. 4 on the all-time list. Tinch was second to GST Racer Sasha Zhoya in the 100m in a personal best of 10.65 amid -2.0 m/s wind in Kingston.
– Lorenzo Simonelli is the 2024 European Indoor champion at 60m hurdles and just took fourth at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing. He has great flat 100m speed and was a member of the Italian squad that claimed 4x100m gold at the 2024 European Championships.
– Jakub Szymanski is the 2025 European Indoor 60m hurdles champion and boasts a 110m hurdles personal best of 13.25 from last year. The Polish star is just 22 years old.
– Ditaji Kambundji is coming off her best indoor season after claiming the European Indoor 60m title and World Indoor 60m silver medal. Last year, she was the silver medalist over 100m hurdles at the European Championships and reached the semifinals of the Paris Olympic Games. She has a flat 100m personal best of 11.47, and likely has the genes to also have success in that event—her sister is World Indoor 60m champion Mujinga Kambundji.
