Sharon Lokedi, Hellen Obiri, Peres Jepchirchir and Brigid Kosgei will headline the elite women’s field for the 2023 TCS New York City Marathon on November 5.

What you need to know:

– This will be the first time in history that the New York City Marathon champion, the Boston Marathon champion, the Olympic champion and the marathon world record holder will compete against each other in New York.

– Sharon Lokedi won the New York City Marathon in her marathon debut last year with a 2:23:23. She was slated to race at this year’s Boston Marathon before withdrawing due to injury. She has not raced at all in 2023.

– Hellen Obiri was considered a favorite heading into last year’s New York City Marathon, which was her debut. She ended up finishing sixth in 2:25:49. She put the disappointment behind her and then won April’s Boston Marathon in 2:21:38. She’s enjoyed some success in New York City this year with a win in March’s NYC Half in 1:05:05 and then a runner-up finish at the Mini 10K in 30:19. This past weekend. She won the Beach to Beacon 10K in 31:37.

– Peres Jepchirchir famously won the Olympic marathon, TCS New York City Marathon, and Boston Marathon within a 12-month span. She’s looking to reclaim her New York City title after not being able to defend it last year due to injury. She was third in April’s London Marathon in 2:18:38.

– Brigid Kosgei, the marathon world-record holder with a personal best of 2:14:04, will be making her New York City Marathon debut. She dropped out of April’s London Marathon less than four minutes into the race. She has been dealing with hamstring and knee problems.

– Kenyan women have won eight of the last nine editions of the New York City Marathon within the past 10 years (2020 was not contested due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

– Lodeki is looking to become the first woman to win back-to-back titles since Mary Keitany’s threepeat in 2014 to 2016.

– Obiri is trying to become the first woman to win the Boston and New York City Marathon titles in the same year since 1989.

What comes next:

– The full New York City Marathon fields will be announced at a later date. The Chicago Marathon has already announced its full elite field. Most top American marathon stars are planning to run either Berlin, Chicago or bypass the fall marathon season due to the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials looming on Feb. 3.
